SPIRITUAL WARFARE PT. 2: SEX & SEXUAL SIN

How is sex a gift from God? God created sex as a gift to be shared between husband and wife (Genesis 2:24). In Genesis, God made Adam from the dust and formed him like a potter forms clay, but God saw that Adam shouldn’t be alone and that there was no partner suitable for him. So He created Eve with one of Adam’s ribs to symbolize their oneness—you could even say they were made for one another. Sexual pleasure is a gift and reward for the mutual dedication, devotion, service, and passion they show to one another. This gift also produces children— another blessing from God— as well as knowledge, protection, comfort, and oneness that manifests when two souls come together.

God designed marriage to be a union of two bodies and two spirits. When Adam and Eve conceived their first child, it did not say they had sex or that they slept together— it said “Adam KNEW Eve his wife, and she conceived" (Genesis 4:1). The use of “knew” suggests the deep intimacy of sex.

In the Bible and throughout history, the distortion and misuse of sexual pleasure always presented itself in times of darkness and lack of faith. Today, culture presents sexual immorality as something desirable. However, partaking in such suggests a longing to trade the glory of God for something that God created. When this gift is abused, it numbs our senses, fills us with lust, distorts our ability to reason, and distracts us from meaningful things— we start to look inwardly as we selfishly desire to fulfill our needs. God created the heavens and the earth and everything in-between. His knowledge is incomprehensible, His blueprints are without fault. Do we think we know better than God who wrote the blueprint for sex? Instead of trusting and being obedient to His laws, we degrade our bodies with one another for a temporary stimulation of pleasure—this is the secular worldview that we cannot accept. Instead, we need to see sex through a biblical worldview, which means recognizing its true meaning and intention.

RECAP

Part I touched on how sex is given to us by God and is an experience that we value. However, our sinful nature and pride can pervert (mind) and manipulate (heart) us into believing that sex can be used on our terms. We turn against God and exchange His glory for lesser things.

The Greek word, "porneia", translates as “sexual immorality”, it means to surrender sexual purity and involves any type of sexual expression outside the boundaries of a biblically defined marriage relationship.

THEMATIC VERSE FOR SEX

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. (Romans 1:24-26)

ABUSING GOD’S GIFT CREATES PROBLEMS: WE CAN & CAN’T SEE

For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. (Luke 8:17)

THE SECULAR WORLDVIEW

  1. Sex is a right

  2. Sex is designed for pleasure

  3. Gender and sexuality are all options someone chooses

  4. There is no correlation between sex and the way our bodies are

  5. Sex can be labor and can be sold

  6. All sexual relations have variable acceptability

    1. Sexual relations with a child, rape, molestation is unacceptable

    2. Adultery, bestiality, incest, polygamy are frowned upon

    3. Divorce, homosexuality, and premarital sex are acceptable

  7. Porn in any form is acceptable, minus child pornography (for now)

The secular worldview of sex must be rebuked in love through word & action in humbleness & servitude.

THE BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW

  1. Sex is a gift and blessing from God

  2. Sex is specifically designed for procreation and covenant marriage

  3. God created male and female only, and He does not make mistakes

  4. God created the male and female body for each other

  5. Sex is not labor and it's not meant to be sold

  6. Adultery, bestiality, divorce, homosexuality, incest, premarital sex, polygamy, and all other sexual relations outside of the marriage bed are specifically mentioned as forbidden

  7. Porn in all forms is forbidden because sex is an experienced to be shared within marriage

The biblical worldview of sex must be defended by the Church and followers of Christ.

HONORING MARRIAGE AND LEAVING THE MARRIAGE BED UNDEFILED PLEASES GOD

Sexual immorality is the worst act of rebellion against God because it defiles, degrades, and misuses the body that God designed for us.

But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away. For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is. Proverbs 6:32-35

I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

I the Lord do not change. Malachi 3:6

Dear Lord,

Whoever has ears let them hear what Your Spirit has to say.

Amen.
