One attribute of God is His omnipresence. There is no where we can go to escape the presence of God. For the Christ follower, this is the greatest comfort. He sees everything we do—whether you declare that Christ is Lord or not. David, the author of this psalm, uses intricate language to describe fleeing the eyes of the Most High. How relatable. Is it not true that when we do something good, admirable, or worthy of praise we want our parents to see our good work? In contrast, we hide from them the things we know are wrong, sinful, or malicious. But there is no where we can go to escape the presence of God. The things that we do in secret because of our shame are clear as day to Him. The darkness doesn’t shroud our detestable works, it doesn’t prevent God from seeing our ways and our heart. This is why God cannot be tricked or deceived by our outward deeds. Nevertheless, God loves His children with an incomparable love and He longs for us to come out of hiding so that we may receive Him. It is this agape love that describes the mercy and grace of our God who will lead us back when we’ve lost our way and comfort us when we are burdened by our fallibility and human reality. It’s easy to turn off the lights and hide from God, but it doesn't make any difference. He is all knowing, all seeing. The darkness cannot overcome the Light.
