Miracles orchestrated by God occur throughout the Bible through ordinary people such as Elijah, Peter, & Paul. However, restoring sight to the blind was the only miracle not performed in the Old Testament but performed by Jesus in the New Testament. It was prophesied that when Jesus came "the eyes of the blind [would] be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert" (Isaiah 35:5-6).

Human sight is critical. Ironically, sight & vision act in different ways. Sight is sensory. Light reflects off of things around us & our brain converts it into images. Vision is the way the mind interprets the images it receives. Sight & vision work in tandem. To disable sight is to interrupt a person’s ability to draw conclusions & discern the world around them.

Spiritual blindness acts in the same way. The inability to see & believe in Jesus Christ prevents us from seeing God & comprehending the Word (Colossians 1:15-16). Jesus is the Word in flesh (John 1:14). So spiritual blindness prevents us from navigating Truth. Our eyes are the windows to our souls, they either allow or prevent light into our being (Matthew 6:22). The cause of spiritual blindness is stated firmly in 2 Corinthians 4:4: The god of this age [Satan] has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

In the spiritual realm, Satan distorts our sight by appealing to our sensual nature—a stark contrast to God’s demand for obedience, morality, & virtue. Our sinful world falls captive to Satan’s schemes (Ephesians 6:11), his temptations (Hebrews 4:15), & his disguise as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) because what Satan offers is instant gratification to our physical being.

Jesus is the Light by which we see (John 1:4-9). The restoration of human vision is symbolic of accepting Truth. Once accepted, we're not only healed from our spiritual blindness but brought into eternal life with the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit (Psalm 146:8).
